How to Monitor Varroa Mite Levels in ApiManager
Varroa mites are one of the most serious threats to honey bee colonies. ApiManager allows you to record mite test results during inspections and visualize mite trends over time, helping you make timely treatment decisions.
What this tutorial covers
- Where to record mite test results
- Supported mite monitoring methods
- How to enter mite test data
- Viewing mite charts and trends
Where mite monitoring is recorded
Mite monitoring is recorded inside the Inspection form. Each inspection can store mite test results for the selected hive.
Common mite monitoring methods
- Sticky Board (Natural Drop)
- Alcohol Wash
- Sugar Roll
- CO₂ Test
Available methods may vary depending on your inspection template.
Step-by-step: Recording mite levels
- Open Inspections from the ApiManager menu.
- Tap/click Create.
- Select the apiary and hive.
- Scroll to the Mite Monitoring section.
- Select the Test Method.
- Enter Mites Count.
- If applicable, enter Bees Sampled.
- Save the inspection.
Understanding sample-based tests
For methods such as Alcohol Wash, Sugar Roll, or CO₂:
- Enter number of mites found.
- Enter number of bees in the sample.
- ApiManager calculates Mites per 100 Bees automatically.
Understanding sticky board (drop) tests
For natural drop tests:
- Enter number of mites fallen.
- Enter number of days the board was in place.
- ApiManager can derive daily mite drop.
Viewing mite charts
- Open Reports or Charts.
- Select Varroa / Mite Monitoring.
- Apply filters (date range, apiary, hive).
Charts show trends over time so you can see whether mite levels are rising or falling.
Using mite data for decisions
- Detect early mite population increases.
- Decide when treatment is needed.
- Evaluate treatment effectiveness.
- Compare mite pressure between hives.
Best practices
- Test regularly (every 3–4 weeks in season).
- Use the same method consistently for better comparisons.
- Record results immediately.
- Review charts before planning treatments.
Consistent mite monitoring is one of the most effective ways to keep colonies healthy and productive.
