How to Add Apiaries and Hive Locations in ApiManager
Apiaries are the “locations” where your hives live. In ApiManager, each apiary can store a name, notes, address, GPS coordinates, and useful context like forage sources, apiary type, and sun exposure. Once your apiaries are set, you can easily organize hives by location and keep your beekeeping data structured.
In this tutorial you will learn how to create a new apiary, define its location, and store GPS coordinates so all your hives, inspections, and work records are correctly linked to a real-world place.
- Create apiaries (locations)
- Add address and descriptive details
- Set GPS coordinates automatically or from the map
- Use apiaries to organize hives and records
Open the Apiary screen
- Open Apiaries from the ApiManager menu.
- Tap/click Create to add a new apiary.
Step 1: Fill the General section
In the General section you define what this apiary is and what makes it unique.
- Name — enter a clear name you will recognize (example: “Oak Meadow”, “Sunflower Field”, “Home Yard”).
- Forages — select one or more forage sources (multi-select) to describe the main nectar/pollen sources around this apiary.
- Type — pick an apiary type that fits your setup (for example stationary / migratory, depending on your configuration).
- Sun Exposure — choose the sun exposure (helps describe the micro-location).
- Description / Notes — add any useful notes (access road, water source, shade, wind, farmer contact, etc.).
Step 2: Add Address details (optional, but useful)
Address fields help you identify the location and share it with others in your team.
- Address — street or nearby landmark
- Zip, City, State, Country
Tip: If you manage multiple apiaries, consistent naming + address makes searching and reporting much easier.
Step 3: Set Map Coordinates (GPS)
GPS coordinates are the most important “location” part — they allow ApiManager to treat the apiary as a real point on the map.
- Latitude — between -90 and 90
- Longitude — between -180 and 180
Option A: Get coordinates automatically
- Tap/click Get Coordinates.
- Allow location permission if asked.
- ApiManager will fill in latitude and longitude for you.
Option B: Select coordinates from the map
- Tap/click Select Coordinates.
- Pick the exact point on the map.
- Save the selection to fill the latitude and longitude fields.
Save your apiary
- Review the fields.
- Tap/click Save.
- Your apiary is now available for organizing hives and planning work.
Hive locations: best practice
A simple workflow that works well in real beekeeping:
- Create an Apiary for each real-world location (with GPS).
- Name hives consistently (for example: A1, A2, A3… or “Home-01”, “Home-02”…).
- If you move hives seasonally, keep apiary names clear and update apiary assignment when you relocate.
- Use Notes in the apiary to store access details (gate code, parking, water source, shade, wind, etc.).
With apiaries and coordinates set, your inspections, treatments, feedings, and harvests become much easier to filter and analyze by location.
